PM helps kick off football foundation
30 January 2007
Tottenham and England stars Paul Robinson and Ledley King headed to Number 10 to help launch a community football project.
The PM enjoyed a kickabout with youngsters in Downing Street to mark the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, which aims to create sporting opportunities for young people in local boroughs.
The budding soccer stars, including some with disabilities, came from a project that meet up regularly for football, contemporary dance and basketball as well as to learn about healthy living.
The Foundation launches with significant support and long-term funding from Spurs. Their total commitment is £4.5m, which represents six per cent of annual turnover.
Trevor Duberry, Social Inclusion Officer, said the Foundation will "give opportunities not just in sports, but also opportunities in education and social inclusion activities as well" and said that Spurs had been "pioneering" in this field.
A community league will also be launched soon and there will be other visits, social inclusion projects and disability work to mark the launch.
